Matrices

Basic matrices up to 4×4 entries in size can be added to an equation by using the matrices palette. To add a larger matrix to an equation, or to set its initial properties, use the Insert Matrix dialog, shown below. This dialog can be opened by selecting Insert Matrix... from either the matrices palette or the Equation menu or by typing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+M.

The maximum number of rows or columns allowed is 32. The OK button is disabled if either value is set higher.

The Default cell alignment control determines the alignment assigned to each entry of the matrix by default. The alignment of each entry can be changed individually by choosing an alignment from the Group menu while the caret is inside the entry’s cell.

If the Equal row heights box is checked, then every row of the matrix is given the same height as the row having the largest natural height. Likewise, if the Equal column widths box is checked, then every column of the matrix is given the same width as the column having the largest natural width.

If the Gap outside first and last rows box is checked, then half of the gap inserted between consecutive rows is added above the first row, and half of the same gap is added below the last row. This ensures that the first and last rows are surrounded on both sides by equal amounts of padding so that anchor positions having a consistent spacing for all rows. This is useful when boxes will be drawn around matrix cells.

Checking the Gap outside first and last columns box has a similar effect by taking half the gap inserted between consecutive columns and adding it before the first column and after the last column.
